A mature 'Meeker' summer-bearing red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) planting established in 1993, in Aurora, Oregon, USA, was used for this study. Plants were established at 0.75 m within rows and 3.0 m between rows and were trained in a hill system. Experiments were conducted during 2001 and 2002 with different combinations of nitrogen (N) fertilizer type and mulch. Black plastic mulch treatment increased the recovery of 15N, nitrogen derived from the fertilizer (NDFF) and percent NDFF in red raspberry plants. There was no effect of N source for these variables, with organic form of N being taken up as efficiently as the granular, inorganic form of N. There was no interaction between type of fertilizer and mulch on any variable measured. These results indicated the potential impact of planting floor management on plant N status..
