Grapes may not be the immediate choice for a designer or landscaper because their clients may not want to think about pruning regimes or producing wine. But vines offer fantastic foliage that can clothe a structure beautifully as well as producing fruit, which in some cases can be ripened outside. There is a huge choice of varieties in the grape genus Vitis. They are divided into colour (white or red/ black), type (dessert or grape), seeded or seedless and whether they can be grown outside or will need the protection of a greenhouse. A few Vitis such as V. vinifera 'Purpurea' Award of Garden Merit (AGM) and V. coignetiae AGM, with its incredible broad leaves, are mainly grown for their foliage, which turns to lovely autumnal shades.
