With increases in production costs rarely keeping pace with a better return on the crop, efficiency in field vegetable production is everything — and that applies as much to harvesting as to any other aspect of the business. One way to improve harvesting efficiency is to reduce handling of waste product. For instance, optical sorting on the self-propelled three- and four-row sprout harvesters manufactured by Dutch company Tumoba means that picked sprouts can be scanned and discarded in the field. Conveyors with rubbered bars replace traditional belts that the company says discharge as much leaf as possible so the sprouts arrive in the hopper as clean as possible. For products that need minimal processing, such as whole-head brassicas, rigs have long allowed harvesting crews to bag as they cut. Produce World has extended the approach, although on a much larger scale, to pre-packed broccoli with the investment in its "field factory", built by VHS.
