A study was conducted in Korea Republic to investigate the cultural factors prone to the incidence of and the control methods for potato common scab (S. scabies [S. scabiei]). An application of 150 kg sulfur powder/10 acres to a low-pH soil reducedthe disease incidence from 70 to 0%. The growth of the pathogen in vitro increased as the pH of the media increased to 9.0. A significant reduction in pathogen growth was observed below pH 5.0, while no growth was observed at pH 3.0. Mulching with plastic film significantly increased common scab incidence. The disease occurred more frequently in cut tubers than in whole tubers. An alternate cultivation of upland potato with rice was also an effective way to suppress common scab. Seed potato disinfectiondid not significantly affect growth and yield.
