Fumigation for Control of common Scab (Streptomyces scabies) in the potato variety eVa grown using Black Plastic Mulch and Drip Irrigation

The potato variety Eva is a fresh market round white variety with a beautiful bright white skinand flesh color,shallow eyes and excellent eating and storage qualities.The one drawback is that it issusceptible to common scab (Streptomyces scabies) that ruins the appearance of the potato.Fumigantshave long been used in vegetable crop production to control nematodes,weeds and other diseaseorganisms.Recently research has been conducted on the use of Pic Plus for control of potato diseases inFlorida and Wisconsin.In this experiment in Pennsylvania the use of the fumigant Pic Plus wasincorporated into the plasticulture production system for potatoes.Pic Plus was applied on May 9,2007at the time of application of the plastic mulch and drip irrigation tubing at the rate of 121 lbs/acre using a55 orifice at 60 psi traveling at 2.9 mph,which worked out to be actual A.I.of 102 lbs of Chloropicrinper acre.On May 22,2007 B size potato seed pieces were planted in double rows spaced 12 inches apartand 12 inches in the row with a waterwheel transplanter.The potatoes were harvested on September 4,2007 weighed and graded according to size and rated for the amount and severity of scab present on thepotatoes.The fumigated potatoes were significantly cleaner (free from scab) than the non-fumigatedpotatoes and also had a significant increase in yield.
