Morphological characteristics and analysis of genetic relationship using RAPD in leaf variegated Hosta minor native to Korea

This study was conducted to investigate the morphological characteristics and genetic relationship among twenty-five variegated leaves, Hosta minor native to Mt. Halla in Korea. Leaf length ranged from 4.0 to 7.8 cm, where a majority was shorter than the standard type. Leaf shape was divided into two groups such as ovate and lanceolate. The type of leaf margin was divided into slightly wrinkled leaf, severely twisted leaf and none wrinkled flat type. Leaf colour was divided into six patterns: green, marginata, mediovariegata, albomaculata, striata, variegata and marginata fused with strip or maculata. Blooming time was generally mid-June and late-June, but some bloomed in late-May. Most of the flower length were about 3.0-4.0 cm which were shorterthan standard H. minor. Flower colour was mostly lavender. However, HM-2, HM-9 and HM-12 were white, and HM-7 was deep purple. RAPD using genomic DNA was conducted in 23 kinds of leaf variegated H. minor. Their similarity ranged from 68.2 to 84.1%. By UPGMA analysis, 23 kinds were classified into three groups: the first group was HM-1 to HM-9, the second group was HM-10 to HM-17, and the third group belonged to HM-18 to HM-25.
