Horticulture's mission is the intensive eculture of plants. That responsibility has f three interwoven facets—providingnutritious, health-enhancing food; cdeveloping and conserving micro- and Jmacro-landscapes; and as a platform for hindividual and community development working dwith plants and their role in the arts, literature hand humanities. Science and technology sunderpins horticulture's evolution while society, o economics and politics shape its context.Great Britain's wartime food shortages shaped nhorticulture in the 1940s and early 1950s. The tidominating "drive for food" was achieved largely gwith tools and techniques from previous eras. r
