Where I live in the South 1 West, between November 2013 and early March 2014 we had 100 consecutive days with rain at some point in every 24-hour period. Indeed, across the UK, last winter will be remembered by many for its rainfall. While the rains may have topped up reservoirs and replenished aquifers, the effect it had on outdoor nursery stock was to wash away a lot of the available nutrients and leave plants hungry. Subsequently, as days lengthen and temperatures rise, outdoor container plants are breaking into growth only to find there is littie to sustain them.
