One hundred years ago Colin Campbell gathered farmers at the Smithfield Show to create what became the largest farming organisation in the country. His leadership guided the fledgling NFU through one of the most challenging times in agricultural history, battling a tide of imports of cheap grain and frozen meat. A century later, the NFU's growers may have different challenges to face but they are just as tough. To help them face the stormy waters ahead, they have elected Sarah Pettitt as chairman ofthe NFU horticulture board - the youngest ever by some distance, at 35.
