It may be as old as the hills, but the people it helps are getting alarmingly younger. The kind of folks seen by Sue Taylor, a senior case worker for the charity Perennial - Gardeners' Royal Benevolent Society, range from a 104-year-old man to a stripling, aged 29. The age balance, however, has shifted at Perennial - which itself is 168-years-old and the only UK charity dedicated to helping horticulturists in need. Not so long ago, the bulk of people helped by the occupational charity were in the upper age range - retired or ageing horticulturists.
