Old and new structures help Rainbow Plants to grow top-quality nursery stock, Sally Drury discovers. The first thing you notice when you arrive at Rainbow Plants is the quality of the stock. There are plants in polytunnels all over the five-acre hillside site and everywhere you look the stock—herbaceous, grasses, shrubs and trees—is tip-top.For 30 years, current owner/ partner Peter Rider farmed field vegetables in West Sussex, sending the produce to the supermarkets and New Covent Garden Market. For the past couple of years, however, his focus has been on nursery stock, having sold his vegetable farm and purchased the wholesale nursery Rainbow Plants just outside Ottery St Mary in Devon.
