There is software available to help and improve the efficiency of almost every aspect of business. But horticulture has been slow to adopt information technology. Many of its businesses use IT only for word processing and some have no computer at all. This situation has arisen from a tack of familiarity with computers in the industry and from bad experiences in which equipment or software has been bought but has not proved its worth. Better and more widespread training is clearly the solution to theproblem of how to make computers accepted more generally in horticulture. A greater awareness of IT among staff would lead to the effective integration of computers into more business activities. But how does a company with little computer experience introduce them into the workplace and how does it produce a strategy to develop the IT knowledge and expertise of its staff?
