New approach to plant health: The NFU has proposed a project to investigate sharing the costs of plant quarantine

Plant health risks posed by quarantine pests and diseases are on the increase as a result of growing and diversifying global trade, travel and transport. This situation is made worse by other complex issues, such as the climate-change-driven expansionof pest ranges - and the ranges of the diseases they vector. Many may argue the obvious answer is to place increasingly restrictive controls on trade. However, these arguments are met by an equally loud voice lobbying against this complex and contentious route. This particular debate is likely to roll on for some time.
