From the review of the production of liquid iron it can be found that, despite alternative installations functioning, the blast-furnace process continues to be the primary source of this product. The development of technology and changes implemented to the blast-furnace process have resulted in an enhancement of its efficiency. Among various ideas for liquid iron production, a considerable part are those based on the use of hard coal as a source of heat and a reducer. According to forecasts, there is a possibility of substituting the blast-furnace process with alternative reduction smelting processes, but only to a certain extent [1,2]. Considerations, such as the environmental aspects of sintering plants, the environmental and economic aspects of coking plants, the relative lack of flexibility and scale of pig iron production, and the excessive accumulation of harmful elements in steel, all increase interest in reduction smelting processes in some circumstances.
