I recently came across an article that outlined a fundamental problem with funding support in health and medical research in Australia. The article discussed how the current funding structure available to research scientists by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is inadequate for those making the transition from early career researcher to running an independent lab. Being someone who has only recendy obtained their PhD, and who certainly fits the bill of an early (very early) career researcher, my attention was certainly captured by this article. The piece went on to describe how funding support for those who have recendy gained their PhD is competitive, but not insanely so -whether that be through an NHMRC training fellowship (highly competitive) or through employment as an NHMRC (or other) grant-funded postdoc.
