Powdery mildew resistance in cultivars of spring barley from Polish register

Fifty spring barley cultivars and breeding lines included in Polish official registration trials in 1997 were tested for powdery mildew resistance with thirty differential isolates. The experiment was conducted in the IHAR Radzik6w greenhouse during winter 1996/1997. From 50 tested cultivars and breeding lines 14 were composed of different lines carrying different genes for resistance. Seventeen different resistance alleles were detected alone or in combination. Among tested cultivars and breeding lines 22% had one gene for resistance and 78% had combination of different genes. Resistance genes at the Mla locus were present in 26 cultivars and breeding lines. However, allele Mlg was the most common resistance allele and was present in 19 tested cultivars and breeding lines. Nine cultivars and breeding lines possesed Mlo resistance. Different strategies for control of powdery mildew using resistance genes are discussed.
