OPPORTUNITIES abound to tell dairy's story in our own communities. Dairy producers around the country reach out through participation in local Ag Days and fairs, as well as conducting tours on their farms. The benefits they receive — that our entireindustry receives — are unmatched. Dairy tours have been an important part of business at the Van Ommering Dairy in San Diego County for decades. Original owner Gerry Van Ommering started conducting small tours for local school children in the 1970s, and eventually her son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Brenda, who currently own and operate the farm, took over. Today, the Van Ommerings conduct tours of their dairy operation for nearly 2,000 elementary school-aged children each spring.
