摘要

The first truly scientific periodical produced in Australia was the Tasmanian Journal of Natural Science. The three volumes of this journal, published in a number of parts between 1841 and 1849, recorded the Transactions of the Tasmanian Society of Natural History that was established by Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Franklin FRS soon after his arrival in Van Diemen's Land in 1837 (Fitzpatrick 1968). This historic journal attracted articles by scientists in the other Australian colonies, and even from overseas. For example, Part I of Volume 1, published in 184l,t included a paper by John Gould on Australian ornithology, and one by Joseph Dalton Hooker of Kew on some Australian plants: it also contained a paper by the distinguished Tasmanian botanical collector Ronald C. Gunn on indigenous Tasmanian food plants. But of particular interest for the present discussion are three publications by the Polish explorer Paul Edmund de Strzelecki, two in 1842 and a third in 1846. One of these, 'On certain varieties of Australian coal' (Streleski 1842a),
