Four strikes leave board maker 147000 pounds poorer

A MERSEYSIDE manufacturer's fourth prosecution in six years has cost it 147 000 pounds in fines and costs after poor plant design led to a dust explosion and fire. On 1 June 2002, smouldering material in the particle board production line at Sonae UK's works at Knowsley, Merseyside, ignited wood dust causing a fire and explosion, badly damaging the plant and halting production for three months. The blast left one of Sonae's workers, John Henry Thomas, with serious injuries including a fractured neck and ribs.
