IN 1999, 7-year-old Jack Sheerin died when a falling goalpost fractured his skull at a football training session. In August 2002, contractors installing equipment for the Fame Academy television programme disturbed asbestos lagging, which was not dealt for 6 months, leaving staff and participants open to the possibility of exposure. Although the entertainment and leisure industry doesn't have the same accident record as industries such as construction, incidents such as these hit the headlines because they often affect the public rather than employees. This review is organised around the 3 aspects that a manager in entertainment and leisure needs to consider. Firstly, the venue. Secondly, the activities within the venue. Thirdly, the equipment required for the activity. Venue, activities and equipment all need to be subject to risk assessment, with hazards identified and assessed, plus safety management implemented and monitored. Within the review, the entertainment and leisure section of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website is mentioned a number of times. To reach this, select "entertainment and leisure" from the "your industry" pulldown on the HSE homepage at www.hse.gov.uk or bookmark www.hse.gov.uk/entertainment.
