Health and safety -- some 'red tape' needed for 'green light' for business, says conference

STRIVING for higher standards, helping to protect people from unnecessary ill health and injury is a great objective. None of the 842 delegates at the IOSH 05 Conference and Exhibition disagreed with the declaration by Lawrence Waterman, the IOSH president, but there was a vigorous debate during the 10 plenary and 32 parallel sessions on how this salutary aim would be achieved. Much discussion emphasised director accountability and management responsibility. Welcoming the delegates to Cardiff, the IOSH president said tackling newer issues, such as occupational health support and stress, would demand more of the professional safety practitioner than ever before.
