摘要

Health and safety commission (HSC) figures suggest that between a quarter and a third of all road traffic incidents involve someone who is at work at the time. In 2000, this translates as over 1000 fatalities considered as occupational. The cost of this to employers in lost productivity, insurance and employee absence is estimated at 2.7 billion pounds a year. In addition, if you consider the number of people involved in road traffic incidents on their way to or from work, there is a sizeable problem that industry needs to tackle. I have concentrated on the human issues affecting road safety, such as driver fatigue, distraction, training, attitude and awareness. Since it comes up frequently, I have looked at the thorny issue of using mobile phones whilst driving. From mobile phones, the problem of all the other high-tech distractions in vehicles also surfaced. The review does not cover vehicle issues such as choice of vehicle, maintenance, dashboard ergonomics or cab design.
