THE FACTS are frightening. Work-related ill health is taking a huge toll on organisations in Britain, at a massive cost to the country. Mental ill health, musculoskeletal disorders, infectious diseases, occupational asthma and dermatitis - all are associated with working conditions and a major source of sickness absence, according to the Health and Safety Executive. And that represents a massive challenge to occupational health teams at a time when their role is itself changing fast and presenting fresh challenges. In 2001-2, an estimated 2.3 million people had an illness which they believed was either caused or made worse' by their work, either past or present, according to the HSE.
