Induction hardening is predominantly used for the production of series parts in large quantities. In addition to standard surface layer hardening, components can be heated through by means of a suitable frequency and heating power. In order tofulfil the high requirements of the automobile industry in terms of the quality of the heat treatment and process safety, an enclosed induction hardening plant with nitrogen has been developed for mandrel hardening of gearshift sleeves. Particularemphasis was placed on the short change-over times and high plant service availability in the design.The components are positioned by a sluice which is equipped with nitrogen flushing. After the short-time austenitization, the components are quenched by means of a polymer solution on a hardening mandrel and a short-time tempering process. Theconstructive design of the plant and the handling results of typical reference parts are presented. Finally, on the surface layer hardening of long shafts is reported. Normal plant technology necessitates long handling times which can be up to 70% of theproduction time. A device was developed to improve the efficiency, reducing the handling times by 30 to 50%.
