Doing the south Pars scramble

Control of Phase 11 of the huge South Pars gas development project offshore Iran is said to be a scramble between BP, TotalFinaElf, Petronas of Malaysia, Statoil and Italy's ENI. And it is going to be an entirely European affair; US-based companies can only sit and watch while others win contracts to exploit one of the world's biggest gas resources. Iran is said to have 15.8% of the world's gas - second only to Russia- totaling 812 Tcf (23 Tcm). Between 8% and 10% of those reserves are said to be within the South Pars field. Successive project phases are intended to tap this huge reserve, bringing the prospects of big gas, condensate, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) projects to the Middle East.
