As a gerontologist, I am especially pleased with issue 30(12), our annual collection of articles about research on middle-aged and elderly women. You will find theoretical, methodological and practical contributions in these articles. The first 2 articles consider caregiving. I found Gupta's work especially enlightening. I recognized immediately that using a systems approach to analyze caring for elders may be appropriate in any culture, although I also appreciated the methods used to generate culture-specific practice recommendations for one community in India. Flores et al. illustrate the power of qualitative case studies in making a theoretical and substantive contribution to the literature as they challenge the notion that the value of familism uniformly contributes to motivation and eldercare practice in Latino families. Reading the article you will learn that Latino daughters in the United States may experience internal conflict as caregivers "while they consider what it means to be a good daughter in the context of disparate cultures.
