Meeting report--the NIDCR 2(nd) Salivary Gland Tumor Meeting, November 2008.

In 2006, the 1st Salivary Gland Tumor Meeting was convened in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the Office for Rare Diseases, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to bring to gether interested clinicians and researchers to present and discuss the recent developments in this field. At the conclusion of this workshop, there was a consensus that a lack of funding opportunities and infrastructure were critical factors for the slow progress and inadequate number of scientists committed to this field. Recognizing that developing national tissue and material resources for these rare tumors is a fundamental first step in stimulating interest in salivary carcinoma research, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), NIH spearheaded an initiative to es tablish a database and biorepository for salivary gland tumor tissues and surrogate materials and for establishing representative cell lines.
