A Simulation of Optimal Layout Type of Reefer Containers in Automated Container Terminal

Recently, the portion of reefer containers is gradually increasing due to growing international trade of agricultural and marine products. Thus, more efforts have been devoted to managing and handling reefer containers more efficiently. For managing reefer containers more efficiently, it is important to optimally determine the block size and the layout of reefer containers in the early design phase. Work balances among blocks of a yard have a significant effect on the productivity of container handling activities in automated container terminals (ACTs), and thus, the productivity of the whole terminal highly depends on the layout of reefer containers in the yard. This paper proposes various layouts of reefer containers blocks in automated container blocks, which are based on the basic plan of Gwangyang ACT in Korea. The simulation was used to find the optimal layout of reefer containers. Results in this study may be utilized as a basis for designing the layout of reefer containers, when an ACT is developed in the future.
