Thailand implements regional zones to contain epidemics

Zoning is part of the answer to better control epidemics by the Thai poultry industry. This plan has been implemented following the Al outbreaks early this year and its value can be tested following the re-appearance of the disease. "Once is enough, we have learned our lesson," is the thinking behind the Agriculture Ministry's Department of Livestock Development (DID) poultry farm zoning system. Based on regions, this system could limit damage to the poultry industry if bird flu or any other fast-spreading dangerous epidemic re-appears. DLD officials, working closely with representatives from the Thai Broiler , Processing Exporters Association, local producers and farmers, have implemented a five region zoning plan - Upper North, Lower North, Northeast, Central and the South, - that will follow the bio-security standards as outlined by the world health animal organization, Office International des Epizooties (OIE).
