Latin America (LA) is a huge continent embracing 42 different countries and an area of 20 million km2 on which around 600 million people live (about 10% of the world's population). Farming is the main economic activity, responsible for the productionand exports of a broad selection of food products, including grains. Some features behind the region's agricultural power are the friendly climatic conditions, vast extensions of arable land, abundance of fresh water, and plenty of disciplined and cost-competitive workers. Supported by those natural driving forces and fed by growing grain volumes - 98 million mt of soybean and 92 million mt of maize in 2006, respectively 52% and 14% of the world's production - the LA poultry meat industry emerges. Overthe past few years the steadily growing importance of the poultry industry made it a front-runner in the regional agricultural scene.
