In September 2007, Vattenfall publicly presented the concept for the future development of mining and power plant operations in the Lusatian lignite mining region. The long-term strategy of sustainable lignite mining and power generation in the region mainly aims at maintaining the power plant sites of Janschwalde, Schwarze Pumpe and Boxberg on the basis of the CCS technology (Carbon Capture and Storage). In addition to the continuation of the Welzow-Sud opencast mine (sub-field II) and the Nochten opencast mine (Nochten priority area), new coal fields - the future mines of Janschwalde-Nord, Spremberg-Ost and Bagenz-Ost -will secure the supply of lignite to these power plants. The future concept of the Lusatian mining region includes, among others, the use of the first CCS-power plant units in the 2020s at Jansch?walde in the south of Brandenburg. One important milestone is the installation of a demonstration plant for low-CO_2 emission lignite based power generation.
