Kleptoparasitism by Great Kiskadee on Little Blue Heron

Kleptoparasitism is a common behavior in birds, and seems to be widespread among Ciconiiforms, both intra and interspecifically. Between 20 23 July 2005, two observations were made of a Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) stealing prey from a Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) in a feeding aggregation on a mudflat in Cananeia, southwestern Brazil. On the two occasions, a Great Kiskadee left a perch to take decapod prey from the heron's bill during a brief hover. Received 12 November 2006, accepted 20 July 2007
