Egg supply a limiting factor for Cobia growth

Since the early 1990's, industrial expansion of cobia (Rachycentron canadum) has been in high gear in southeast Asia. Now, a decade later, building upon that early successes, interest, research, and commercial ventures have begun to materialize elsewhere in the tropical and semi-tropical latitudes. Today, cobia are recognized worldwide as being among the leading candidate species for food-fish production. This interest and commercial expansion is due in large part to the many beneficial aspects of this species for commercial production. These include, but are not limited to: captive brood-stock being amenable to reproduction; established and reliable larval production protocols; propensity for rapid growth, both in net pens and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS); ability to utilize alternative sources of protein and lipids; high disease resistance; and ability to produce a high quality dense white fillet acceptable to both mainstream and high-end market channels.
