The Middle Eastern nation has begun to supply bunker fuel that meets the IMO's new stricter max. sulfur content of 3.5% ahead of the Jan. 1, 2012 deadline. A senior fuel oil trader for the National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC) said the firm is now producing 280 cst grade straight-run bunker fuel with a sulfur content of 3.0% and 380 cst grade with a sulfur content of 3.4%. While NIOC supplies both 280 and 380 cst grade bunker fuel as finished products, both grades would most likely be used as blending components due to their lower sulfur content.
