As the Nov. 5 bidding deadline for purchasing France's Petit-Couronne refinery approaches, the CGT is calling for a 24-hour strike that same day. Unless a bid is submitted by the deadline, the refinery, once owned by now-insolvent Petroplus, will be liquidated and its workforce laid off. Petit-Couronne workers also blocked the Rubis oil terminal on Oct. 24 in an associated act of protest. The union, which represents France's refinery and oil storage workers, has said it is protesting the plant's closure, as well as demanding that government step in to assist the floundering French oil industry, which has shut down four refineries since 2009.
