China became the world's top energy consumer in 2010, overtaking the US, as global demand for all forms of energy soared and countries recovered from the economic recession. Global energy consumption grew 5.6% last year, the highest rate since 1973 and above the pre-recession peak hit in 2008, according to the annual BP Statistical Review of World Energy published on June 8.
