Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has latched onto the prospect of rising Japanese gas demand in the wake of that country's devastating Mar. 11 earthquake as both a reason and a means to speed up development of East Siberia and the Russian Far East as a new center for gas and oil supplies to Asia. Japanese companies have been invited to take part as direct participants in developing the giant Kovykta and Chayandinskoye gas fields - reserves Beijing has been counting on as an eventual source for gas for China.
