Slow progress on an alternative energy program is forcing LNG exporter Abu Dhabi to turn to LNG imports to meet surging electricity demand. The LNG plans, announced recently by a joint venture of state companies Mubadala and Ipic, will initially involve using a floating import terminal with capacity of 4 million tons per year (530 million cubic feet per day) from 2014, with the prospect of increasing to 8 million tons/yr with a permanent facility (WGI Apr. 18' 12). It would be the United Arab Emirates' second floating import terminal: The first, in Dubai, brought in 1 million tons of Qatari LNG last year under a long-term contract with Royal Dutch Shell.
