French PM Harries GDF on Oil Indexing

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has suggested that GDF Suez should renegotiate long-term gas contracts with three major suppliers to benefit consumers. "We want to ask GDF Suez again to renegotiate these contracts, with Norway, with Russia and with Algeria, which, when they were negotiated - these long-term contracts which guarantee gas supplies - were indexed to oil prices," he said in a radio interview last week. "As the price of oil rises, gas consumers are penalized. These contract rules must be changed, so that we can get back to gas prices being set at levels that respect consumers' purchasing power."
