Gazprom kicked off the race to deliver more pipeline gas to Europe last month when it held the symbolic first weld ceremony for its massive South Stream project at Anapa, on Russia's northern Black Sea coast. The pipe ?backed by President Vladimir Putin ?is planned to run under the Black Sea via the Balkans to northern Italy, ultimately delivering 63 billion cubic meters per year (6 billion cubic feet per day).
