The EU wants to create a continent-wide network of LNG refueling stations for long-distance haulage vehicles by 2020, but Brussels' desire to have private investors take the lead could doom the project to failure. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, is pushing for 106 new refueling stations to be built, with the goal of having one every 400 kilometers (250 miles) along Europe's major highways - LNG-powered trucks can typically run for 800 km-900 km on a full tank - at a total cost of around ?58 million ($76 million). Brussels last week unveiled the start of an appraisal process identifying and highlighting missing links in the proposed European LNG chain - and as there are now just 38 such stations across Europe, of which 22 are in the UK, the report is likely to be highlight heavy.
