摘要

Adoption by the European Commission in Nov. 2003 of a proposal (IP/03/1516) that would harmonize EU member states' widely divergent laws on the voluntary fortification of foods with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other substances (such as herbal extracts) is discussed. Aspects considered include: addition of vitamins and minerals to foods which are lost during the manufacturing process; potential toxicity of vitamins if taken in large quantities; and allowance of the addition of fortifiers to any food with the exception of fresh foods, such as fruits, vegetables and meat, and alcoholic beverages.
