China set to issue detailed guidelines on commercialization of GMO products

Shanghai--China will soon issue more detailed "implementing guidelines" to a general law issued in May 2001 on the commercialization of products made with genetically modified organisms, according to the country's leading expert in the field. China is now "dealing with transgenic food issues, but the rules are still not set," Chen Zhangliang, vice president of Beijing University and a consultant to the drafters of China's GMO laws, said after giving a presentation at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference October 20. "This is a very controversial area," Chen said. "The governments are concerned with imports and exports." APEC has set objectives for harmonizing GMO standards in its 21 member economies.
