A Brief Introduction to the Institute of Latin American Studies under Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

Situated in a quiet and traditional courtyard at 3 Zhang Zizhong Road, the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) under Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is China's only major research institution devoted to Latin American studies. ILAS was founded on July 4, 1961 as one part of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1964 it was transferred to the International Liaison Department of Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. It was closed during the Cultural Revolution and reopened in April 1976. Since January 1981 it has been affiliated to CASS. At present, Su Zhenxing is Director, and Nan Shicha-ng, Xu Shicheng and Li Wenju are Deputy Directors.
