Two Rutgers peach evaluators offer their wide range of suggested varieties. FOR the past 30 years, we have been evaluating peach cultivars from the Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) breeding program and other programs, as wellas nurseries and growers. Our goal is to find the best cultivars for the New Jersey industry. The New Jersey peach industry has historically been focused on growing and marketing yellow-fleshed peach varieties with complete red color underlain with a bright yellow-orange skin, large size, low pubescence, and a firm, highly-flavored flesh. Trees need to be regularly productive and vigorous, with low susceptibility to major peach diseases, especially bacterial spot which is common in New Jersey. Productivity is evaluated by recording tolerance to winter and spring low temperature, date of bloom, and level of fruit set.
