Made In The Shade: Michigan State University researchers share blueberry shading study findings

USING shading nets to delay harvest in Michigan and Chile shows promise, according to a study by researchers from Michigan State University (MSU) and Universidad de Talca, Chile. The work was initiated in Chile in 2003 by Dr. Jorge Retamales and his student Gustavo Lobos. In the blueberry production regions of Chile, where it is often very hot and sunny, the pair hypothesized that shading would reduce stress and enhance yield. Retamales, who received his Ph.D. from MSU, has worked with Dr. Jim Hancock, MSU horticulture professor, many times throughout the years.
