KMI Conference, long known as 'Newport show,' to be held in new venue in Rhode Island

The 28th Annual KMI Research Conference will be held November 14-15 at the Providence Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island, where it will be co-located with IWCS/Focus and a new plastic optical fiber (POP) event. The KMI conference, long called the "Newport show" because it was held in Newport, will identify major changes underway in the fiber optics industry. At its website, KMI notes that there is more activity in areas such as: broadband access shifting to fiber -home, -the-curb, -the-node, or -the-building; new applications, especially in the area of digital video, evolving rapidly and continuing to drive bandwidth requirements; despite talk of a fiber glut, it is not everywhere, and operators continue to build new routes in underserved areas and to 'overbuild' older backbones in select locations; as well as new standards, new fiber and cable products, and new transmission technologies that mean new "formulas" for proving in fiber optic systems; and lastly, there are bandwidth increases spurring upgrades in wireless networks, data centers, long-haul backbones, premises networks, and business and residential access networks, with many of the new technologies fiber-based.
