A look at the technical advantages of producing tempered wire for industrial and automotive springs through the use of advanced product handling and in-line induction heating for water quenching. Mario Frigerio and ATE have formed a partnership in this project and successfully achieved their goal. A continuous process from rod to finished package has been developed by the companies. The development of this process has been made possible through the introduction of specific material handling equipment between the drawing process and the treatment line. Wire size change and welding can be performed through the use of an automatic robot that reduces the labor needed for this operation as well as reduces downtime. The wide range of diameters that the line can handle is also helped by a quick inductor change at the furnace position. This rapid inductor change eliminates the long downtime involved in replacing the inductors on the main unit.
