As a recap, we touched on the reasons for the implementation of MRP (Material Requirement Planning) and ERP software. Typically ERP software includes MRP and more. Capacity planning and scheduling was given a brief overview and we shed some light on the reality of business; not all jobs are equally as profitable. Why aren't they? If you're part of associations that conduct shop tours and you've taken part in some of them, you've seen other shops. I've also seen many. After 12 years of visiting shopsright across Canada, I can count on one hand the number of shops that were paperless. The vast majority of shops rely on typical production work orders that are printed out from varying sources and then distributed in the shop. Changes are communicated by re-issuing work orders, running out into the shop and replacing the old ones. Or perhaps they are handled by a shop foreman who scribbles changes on the work orders in progress. This is fairly common. Regardless of how you look at it, it's usually a pretty rudimentary system. One that works, but may be far from optimal.
