Experiences with Construction of Very High Tiered Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls in India

摘要

Ever since Henry Vidal pioneered the modern concept of reinforced soil, this technique has been applied for the construction of steep soil slopes and vertical retaining walls all over the world. In the modern times, the reinforced soil walls and embankments were first built in France and later spread to different countries. The first walls and embankments were built in France in late 1960's and in USA in the mid 1970's. In India, these walls have been in use from the mid 1980's. These walls are builtusing different types of facings like full-height panels, discrete facing panels and modular blocks and different types of reinforcement elements like polymeric grids, steel and polymer strips, steel ladders, anchored steel strips, etc (Rajagopal et al.2010). When it is required to build very high walls, it is preferable to construct the wall with berms at some intermediate heights. This type of construction enhances the aesthetic appearance and also contributes towards the global stability and leadsto economy in construction.
